About this project

THE PROBLEM
The trust was receiving complaints that training hosted online was not accessible enough. The trust wanted to address this immediately so the L&OD department formalised a project to address this.

THE SOLUTION
Wearing multiple hats I lead this project. I was very hands on, applying a lot of the system development to the LMS whilst working with course content designer to apply changes to learning content. The Project was broken up into the following steps:
-
carried out an accessibility audit with third party experts to identify the gaps
-
system development was carried out on LMS website to fix where accessibility failed
-
existing learning content was updated as, so for example transcripts added to all video
-
processes put in place to ensure all future learning content builds meet the AA standards
-
training up the workforce in particular SME's and trainers

THE RESULT
The LMS is now fully conforms to the WCAG 2.1 AA standard and is regularly monitored and re-audited to ensure it keeps conforming. The trust is proud to of achieved this but even more so the trust's internal disability network are really pleased as they pushed this need forward and helped us build the business case. New standards and processes are now applied to new training content builds. However, as we started this journey we decided to split this work into two phases. Phase one complete, the second phase is to start work on older training content in the catalogue training offering.
